  • Instructor, Vocal Improv

Tom Weiser is an improvising vocalist who performs in the Denver area with his jazz ensemble, his a cappella vocal improv group, Magpie, and his electronic looping duo, Loop2Loop.

"I love grooves. I love dancing and I love playing and singing for dancers. My groove explorations started with self-taught boogie-woogie piano, passed through a New Wave rock-and-roll band, and blossomed in Congolese and Haitian drumming. Swing dance fever (I had a pretty bad case…) introduced me to the great American song book and ultimately led me to becoming a jazz singer. I love harmony and counterpoint. My grandparents’ love of chamber music inspired me to play baroque flute sonatas and ultimately led me to a Masters in Musical Composition at CCNY. I love improvising, particularly in small ensembles. I’ve been lucky to study with David Darling, Bobby McFerrin, Jay Clayton, Rhiannon, Mark Miller, Art Lande, and Brad Goode. I have completed Music for Peoples Musicianship and Leadership Program as well as Rhiannon's All The Way In program. I’ve collaborated extensively in improvised performances with such groups as: Vox Pop, Cricket Field Theory, Cookiehead’s Playground, Vox Libera, Flux Crew. I performed with the Midday Music Meditation ensemble at the Boulder Library for ten years. I currently perform with the Magpie vocal improvisation ensemble. I'm interested in creating compelling and evocative vocal soundscapes and intermixing spoken and sung word.
I love teaching and learning. I led the Vocal Improv Lab in NYC for ten years before moving to Colorado.  I earned a Master’s degree in Indo-Tibetan Buddhism at Naropa University and taught tai chi and meditation there for ten years. I'm currently teaching myself to play trombone."

  • Instructor, Improv

"What we do as improvisers ought to be deliberate and intentional. And we should notice everything that is happening in the scene. We will focus on the character’s point of view and the emotional dynamic that is created. It involves being in connection to your scene partner, challenging your comfort zone, relinquishing your ego, and developing the confidence to be in the present moment."
